Installation of Data Infrastructure at Travis Perkins Northampton Office Extension

An exciting expansion plan to the head offices of Travis Perkins in Northampton saw the site double in size and present a new challenge for adapting and upgrading the current system for tomorrow’s needs.

 

The M&E contractor NEC Ltd selected Netcab for its specialisation in the field of voice and data communication. Having worked successfully with NEC on previous projects, we quickly found the correct solutions to give the client what they wanted, when they wanted it.

 

The buildings communications requirement had to be able to utilise existing technologies in the phone system, but also have the capacity to cope with their expanding IT network.

 

Within the 2 story extension the requirement was set for 850 outlets over 3 floors. The size of the extension dictated that each floor have it’s own data cabinet where the cat 6 outlets are terminated.

 

Each cabinet on the 3 floors have been linked back to the main communications room with 8 core Multimode fibre optic for data uplinks, and a 100 pair 1308 cable terminated onto 2 x 50 way RJ 45 voice patch panels at either end for voice.

 

The installation process was broken down into typical first and second fix phases in accordance with the project plan of the buildings construction. Following the second fix, full testing of each of the outlets and uplinks has been successfully completed.

 

A separate fibre optic connection was required from the main communications room to an external electrical riser cabinet for monitoring purposes. Due to the route the fibre had to run in both containment and rodent proof steel tape fibre for its protection. As the service was deemed non critical it was decided a backup secondary fibre using an alternate route would not be required.

 

On completion of the installation the Cat 6 System installed is backed with a 25 year Application warranty.

 

The conclusion of the contract has seen the successful installation of a new infrastructure that has provided a sound base to the new extension allowing staff to manage their resources effectively and provide fast and secure access to their state of the art IT backbone.
